"There are some very odd indications that Albo also created images under the names "A. Curtis" and "Rod Palmer." One site reports that Albo's real name was "Rod Palmer," but whether this is true is open to a great deal of conjecture.

What is known (we think) is that he studied at the Russian Royal Academy of Art. Some say he painted for the czar, but in my mind, this is doubtful since he was only around 24 when the tsar was deposed.

Albo is said to have been a violinist and a ballet dancer, and he is famous for his paintings of ballerinas, done in the world's ballet capitals of Paris, Moscow and Berlin. He painted all over the world but lived much of his life in New York City.

It is reported that Albo did not speak English and if a client wanted to communicate or commission a work, he or she needed to find someone who spoke Estonian.

There are many indications that Albo struggled throughout his career, and a number of his pictures can be found reproduced as images for jigsaw puzzles.

"Free as the Wind" is Albo's most famous work, and it was once distributed by Post Cereals (General Foods) as some sort of premium earned by consumers collecting "stamps," or perhaps "coupons," off cereal boxes.

This promotion apparently occurred in January 1967 and, judging by the frame that holds the piece in today's question, that is about the right time period for this piece. The picture looks to be in good to excellent condition, and if I have the scale right from the piece being propped up against the end of a bed, the size is one that would make this piece appropriate for hanging above a sofa.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this is a mass-produced print and that it is no more than about 40 years old. I could find no records of sales for either Albo originals or prints, but feel the insurance-replacement value for the piece in today's question is less than $125."
