Did John Smith Introduce Coffee to America?

America is the largest coffee drinking society, yet nobody is quite sure who introduced it there.  In the early history of this country, no one laid claim to first importing coffee.  The first settlers probably thought this was insignificant to record in their journals compared to: exploring new lands, meeting the natives and of course fighting for survival.

One theory is that Captain John Smith introduced coffee to America.  Why is this theory of interest to me?  Well, Smith was a Lincolnshire lad; born in Willoughby (near Alford) and educated in Louth.  It would be great to think that someone from Lincolnshire had such an influence on the world of coffee (not that I'm putting down Smith's other achievements).

I watched enough daytime TV as a student to know that a suspect must have both a motive and an opportunity (thank you Messrs Columbo, Quincy & Petrocelli).  So did Smith have both the motive and opportunity to bring coffee to America?

Motive

In Smith book "Travels and Adventure", published in 1603, he wrote the following about the Turks:

"Their best drink is coffa of a graine they call coava"

So Smith not only had knowledge of coffee he also liked it.

You could argue that Smith meant that coffee was the best of what the Turks had to offer.  Smith would have been used to drinking beer: breakfast, lunch and dinner.  But as the Turks were Muslim, no beer would have been available.  So Smith might have considered coffee as simply a substitute for beer.  However, history shows that when coffee houses were introduced to England towards the end of 17th Century, most men (sorry women were excluded) ditched the tavern in favour of the coffee house.  Therefore, Smith probably considered coffee as a real alternative to beer.

When Smith and his fellow settlers finally arrived in Virginia, in 1607, they were in for a pretty tough time (not that four months spent crossing the Atlantic in three tiny wooden boats was a piece of cake).  Of the 104 original settlers only 38 survived beyond a year.  Where does coffee come into play?  Well, back then coffee was considered a medicine, a miracle cure.  What better way to survive the harsh Virginia winter than a hot coffee in your belly.  The Sioux (who later on in history adopted coffee) actually called it kazuta sapa: black medicine.

Opportunity

So Smith had the motive to introduce coffee: it was something he enjoyed and he believed it could save lives.  But even if he wanted to bring coffee to America, would he of been able to?

As a member of the Jamestown council (and at one stage leader), Smith would have had some influence over what supplies should be brought over from England.  So conceivably he could have asked for coffee.  But, as Smith was ahead of his time, and coffee wasn't widely available in England until after 1650, he was unlikely to receive any.

Even though, the English owned East India Company started trading coffee as early as 1607, it's believed that this coffee was brought from Arabia to sell on in Persia and India.   It wasn't till later on in the century, after demand grew, that they became the biggest importer of coffee to England.

The Verdict

As Smith's stay in Virginia was short lived (he had to return to England in 1909 after being accidently injured) it's unlikely that Smith himself introduced coffee.  Supplies from England simply weren't available. Even if suppliers of coffee were scarcely available, they wouldn't be wasted on these lowly settlers.  The settlers wouldn't have been considered of much value back in England until after 1612, when John Rolfe introduced tobacco from the Caribbean (tobacco was a valuable commodity).

So even though Smith hadn't managed it; as a strong and charismatic leader, I can always hope that he inspired a fellow settler (or their descendant) to demand coffee's export to America.

then there were a few more made with tng characters right up till nemsis a few years ago!!!!!!

Taking Risks: Star Trek and the Moon Landing

With the J.J. Abrams Star Trek "origins" movie, this significant franchise is getting a much-deserved reboot into the popular consciousness. At the very end of the movie, when Leonard Nimoy recited the famous "Space: the final frontier..." intro and we heard the original TV show theme music, I was suddenly beamed into nostalgia land.

I never considered myself to be a Trekkie, or Trekker, or Trekkist, or whatever you want to call them. Nevertheless, as a kid I made sure to catch every episode of Star Trek because the stories were thought-provoking and just plain fun.

Sure, it was mostly a cheesy, low-budget fantasy show with laughably cheap sets, but Star Trek also featured some high-quality, well-written shows among the occasional mediocre ones. Some episodes were brilliant, some were so-so, but none were totally bad. Even the worst ones had something of interest to offer. Star Trek always made you think, in the same way The Twilight Zone would grab you and turn your usual thought patterns inside out and upside down.

Returning to Yesterday with Star Trek: The Original Series (ST:TOS)

Not too long ago, I was surprised to learn that all 79 episodes of ST:TOS can be found at CBS.com, remastered in Hi-Def with no commercials. And that brings me to a recent revelation. When I found this Trek treasure-trove, it was hard to decide what I should watch. Over the years, I'd seen most of the shows over and over again, but there were some that I had only caught once when they first aired.

Pretty much at random, I played "Return to Tomorrow" and visited an episode I hadn't seen in over forty years. From the perspective of an adult, I found this story to be a fine example of the worst and best aspects of the original Star Trek.

The Enterprise comes across a planet that harbors pure-energy remnants of three survivors from a race that had died off half a million years earlier. These aliens seek to "borrow" the bodies of Enterprise crew members (Kirk, Spock and a hot chick) so they can build androids into which they will transfer their non-corporeal consciousness -- then they can live again as physical beings. Complications and a corny tragic romance ensue in predictable fashion.

A Prophetic Monolog: Captain Kirk's famous "Risk" Speech

Twenty minutes into this episode, the key Enterprise members are trying to decide if they should comply with the alien's wishes. All agree to go along except Dr. McCoy who considers the procedure to be unpredictable and far too risky. This prompts Kirk to give the following over-the-top speech, embarrassingly delivered in William Shatner's trademark jolting, highly impassioned manner that has endeared him to millions of fans.

"They use to say if mankind could fly, he'd have wings -- but he did fly. He discovered he had to. Do you wish that the first Apollo mission hadn't reached the moon, or that we hadn't gone on to Mars and then to the nearest star? That's like saying you wish that you still operated with scalpels and sewed your patients up with catgut like your great-great-great-great grandfather used to. I'm in command. I could order this, but I'm not because Doctor McCoy is right in pointing out the enormous danger potential in any contact with life and intelligence as fantastically advanced as this, but I must also point out that the possibilities -- the potential for knowledge and advancement is equally great. Risk! Risk is our business. That's what this starship is all about. That's why we're aboard her. You may dissent without any prejudice. Do I hear a negative vote?"

The Moon Landing is ancient history in Star Trek's world

Did you catch that reference to "the first Apollo mission"? This show originally aired on February 9, 1968. To the audience at the time, the moon landing had not yet taken place, and it was by no means a sure thing. In fact, we now know that there were serious technical problems encountered during the landing, and it was only the uncanny piloting skills of Neil Armstrong, plus a lot of luck, that avoided a horrible disaster on that momentous day in July, 1969.

But for Captain Kirk, the moon landing was old news, as it is for us today. And this demonstrates the abiding appeal of science fiction that Star Trek brought to a global mass audience. "Risk is our business." Embrace the possibilities of the future, then some day you can look back and marvel at the wonders that have come to pass.

Past and Future Trek:  Gene Roddenberry's Legacy

In many ways, Star Trek showed us what was scientifically feasible -- and in some cases, it actually made them come true. It is well-known that the cool futuristic "communicator" inspired the invention of a practical mobile phone (according to its inventor at Motorola, Dr. Martin Cooper). Now let's get busy with the universal translator, phaser, replicator, transporter, and holodeck.

Star Trek continues to lead humanity toward a wondrous future. The original series made a significant impression on the Baby Boomers, and the latest incarnation will certainly have a similar impact on Millennials who have never seen Classic Star Trek.

Thank you, Gene (wherever you are), for continuing to portray a positive, exciting vision of humanity's future. Hey, it looks like maybe I'm really a Trekkie after all. Okay, I can accept that... Beam me aboard!

Sea Captain
Sea Captain 10 Sea Captain
Was this you..An old sea captain was sitting on a bench near the ?

wharf when a young man walked up and sat down. The young man had spiked hair and each spike was a different color.... green, red, orange, blue, and yellow.
After a while the young man noticed that the captain was staring at him. "What's the matter old timer, never done anything wild in your life?
The old captain replied, "Got drunk once and shagged a parrot. I was just wondering if you were my son!"

ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
This one made my day.
Thanks!

Captain Courageous Takes on High Seas Piracy

Modern day high seas piracy.  It happens every day.

It may lack the Hollywood charm of Johnny Depp and the Pirates of the Caribbean, but the life and death drama is real and a pressing issue.

Captain James K. Staples, referred to by some members of the press as Captain Courageous, a three decade sea captain, Master Mariner and U.S. Merchant Marine, has launched a consulting service to combat high seas piracy.  He has recently been utilized as an expert by CBS News, CNN, FOX, MSNBC, BBC and organizations such as Navy and Coast Guard. He has been a key note speaker for NATO and other security conferences.

Staples also served as spokesman for the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay, Mass. when fellow alum and friend Richie Phillips, Captain of the Maersk Alabama, a U.S.-flagged container ship was attacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean, was being held hostage in a recent high profile piracy incident. Now he is reaching out to the international maritime community to offer his expertise and insights.

Staples is no stranger to piracy threats. In addition to commiserating with other seasoned captains about the growing problem, he experienced unwanted guests approaching his own ship the Green Bay.  After firing two shots from his Browning Hi Power 9 mm pistol over the offenders bow and witnessing a quick retreat by the suspects, Staples realized how close he came to a deadly situation.

"High seas piracy affects us all," noted Staples.  He elaborated, "From the hostages who get raped, beaten and murdered, to the shipping lines who get blackmailed, to the anxious families of crews throughout the world to consumers paying higher prices at Wal-Mart."

Battling piracy can be traced back to 1797 when the USS Constitution, the oldest naval vessel in world still afloat, was launched and pressed into service fighting piracy along Africa's Barbary Coast.  Today Somalia is a Mecca for pirates and they have nearly crippled shipping in the Gulf of Aden.  Piracy is also rampant from the Strait of Malacca and Indonesia to Venezuela, Nigeria and the Persian Gulf.

Smaller crews – down from 42 to 19 on most overseas voyages – and more desperate times have been contributing factors to the rise in piracy.  Staples also notes that a lack of state of the art surveillance equipment (including thermal imaging and infrared cameras tied into radar) on ships puts honest seafarers at a disadvantage.

Staples addressed the common sense and controversial ways to combat piracy and to keep shipping crews and their cargo safe.  From trained marksmen and anti-piracy teams onboard to better technology, he outlines methods of taking the seas back from organized pirate groups and rouges.

"Going to sea is dangerous enough.  Fire, sinking, drowning – it just part of the challenge. Piracy takes that danger to a new level and it must be curtailed," noted Staples.
