what websites are great for comic book fans?

my boyfriend is a comic book fan. i am looking for t-shirts for him but i dont know where to go. i am also looking for vintage transformers t-shirts for christmas. please help. any website with great merchandise

backissuecomics.co.uk They sell to all country and keep up with all comics.... and for t-shirts try www.t-shirtking.com They have a ton of comic t-shirts. Or mavel.com for marvel merch.

Remember when you were a kid and your mom, dad, uncle, aunt or grandparent would take you to the toy store or some other leading big-box department store. As you rush towards the action figure aisle, your heart speeding in fervour as you make your means to this supernatural toy of imaginativeness.

Now a lot of men still might purchase an action figure or two sporadically. Action figures today have become so detailed, so artistic and so coveted. These so-called "toys" remind us of our freewheeling youth. I personally have purchased around 16 action figures in the past year.

Athlete Action Figures

What I'm really into, just like so many other grown men, are action figures associated to professional athletes. The detail in some of these pieces of new art are spectacular. They have a team jersey down to every tone of color. Currently manufacturers of action figures actually make licencing arrangements with companies who sponsor a specific athlete and professional sports teams. These are reflected in some action figures as well. I am a massive professional ice hockey fan, and really am a great fan of Alexander Ovechkin. Ovechkin has an endorsement deal with CCM, wearing a CCM helmet, gloves, hockey pants and skates. The Ovechkin doll that I have has all the logos in place just like the real Alexander Ovechkin when he takes the ice in the Verizon Center.

Sci-Fi Action Figures

With the revitalization of sci-fi films and television, sci-fi action figures have also been best-selling. This movement started out with the successful Star Wars franchise films. These love affairs with the figures were rekindled when the original trilogy and the new prequel trilogy were released about a decade ago.

Original action figures were produced in celebration of these films. However this time the dolls were made with such detail and preciseness, it made accumulating these figures by grownups much more acceptable than in the past. The original marketplace for these toys were youngsters, nonetheless this higher level of detail can only be prized by the eye of an adult. This tendency retains today with other sci-fi characters of today's pop culture.

Todd McFarlane Toys

Comic book creator Todd McFarlane has created a toy company that was really at the forefront of this new breed of action figure explosion. Being an artist of sci-fi and comic books he understood the detail that can be crammed into these action figures.

Collecting Action Figures

When garnering action figures, you should collect as if they are fine pieces of art. You must not collect for investing purposes instead for the admiration of these works of art. If you like what you see then buy it. Even if it does not go up in value you can still delight in the aesthetics of your action figure. If you ever desired to collect as an investing opportunity then there are a few things you should know.

When a new film or television series is premiered, especially if it is a sci-fi base project, then chances are action figures will be manufactured in alignment with the premiere of these motion pictures or television series. If this is the case, eBay has hundreds of vendors who deal these investment objects before the film or series premieres. Normally the price for these items will be modest and are fitting for purchase.

After the sci-fi movie or series is premiered, usually the cost of these action figures will rise. Especially if the film becomes an unanticipated commercial success. This is great because once the motion picture is popular there will be more need for their affiliated action figures however supply will already have been dried up. This is where, you as a collector or investor can turn a profit big time. Merely trade your action figure back on eBay. It's that easy. I've been doing it for quite a while, with what I regard pieces of artistic creation that I no longer love or treasure any longer.

Wishing you the very best in your action figure investment opportunities and this incomparable form of art collecting.

I write a lot about modern action figures at http://www.inchactionfigures.com - I especially like Star Wars Action Figures.

Duck Art
Duck Art
American Folk Art??

What exactly is American Folk Art???

Are Duck Decoys and Scrimshaw considered art?

Google the name Grandma Moses and you will see what folk art is all about.

Duck Hunting And The Passion Thereof

Duck hunting has been around for years, literally thousands of years. Although our forefathers of old may not have hunted ducks and geese with shotguns loaded with 3 inch shells containing steel shot or some other form of non toxic shot, they were hunting ducks none-the-less. It goes without saying that a many a man has had this passion to chase ducks as we bear in our hearts today in the 21st century.

However, the reasoning behind our forefathers chasing these beauties was to provide for their family in the ways of providing tablefare. "Meat on the table." They chased these beauties for no other reason but to provide for the family in the means of food.

Or did they?, I would have to say that they enjoyed the hunt, the chase, the art of using skill and techniques in their manners and means whereby they hunted and were able to harvest these ducks and geese. It was more to it to them than just providing food for their table, there was an element there of "enjoying the Hunt thoroughly". Why do I say this? Well, archeologists and researchers alike have both continually found wall paintings, engravings, and murals inside of ancient caves all over the world. Some of these paintings revealed the hunter attempting to capture ducks both in flight and while on the water with spear in hand; signifying that was the way in which they were indeed pursued throughout many of the early years prior to shotguns and modern technologies.

The mere fact that these paintings were painted all over the world inside the "bedrooms" of the worlds first frontiersmen reveals that there was more to ducks than just their providing a food for these early settlers. These ducks provided somewhat of a recreation back then. What is it that is so intriquing about ducks and the pursuit thereof? Maybe it’s their mannerisms and gracefulness in flight, their beauty and the design that points us to a unique and artistic creator, their intriquing ways in which they can become so wary when actively pursued, their quacks, the beauty in watching them peel over the tops of trees while being silhouetted by the morning sun’s glow or their simple majesty of just being a duck.

I would like to say that it is all of these and more that has grabbed the heart of men then and in the now. We are continually amazed at these beautiful winged creatures and the subsistence they provide us. The chase, the pursuit is just as deeply engrained in our spirits as it was our fathers of the yesteryears such that we are still painting it on the wall. Maybe not in caves, but in our minds, hearts, magazines, in photos, and over the internet.

These ducks and the overwhelming satisfaction and fulfillment that they provide mankind with. This deep down heartfelt happiness and gratitude just to watch several ducks or several dozen come to a feeding location and land within our decoy setup. Wow, just to think about it gets us excited. It is this heartfelt, deep down passion and drive that causes us (hunters) to arise early before the break of dawn to pursue the fields in leu of seeing these ducks one more time.

And it was this same passion that caused our forefathers to go the extra mile, by painting their hunts and the memories thereof on the walls of caves for persons thousands of years later to discover.

We haven’t changed much from that of our forefathers. Not really. About the only difference is that we now implement duck decoys, duck calls and the usage of other modern amenities to help aid us in our success of harvesting ducks and/or geese.

So when you are preparing your upcoming hunts and are in your truck, your boat or on foot trying to get to your favorite duck hunting shoot. Just be thankful that you are able to be actively involved in something that is a time honored activity that is driven by passion. The passion and gift that the Lord has giving us to be able to see, hear, watch, learn from, respect and hunt waterfowl.

To ensure you have wonderful outting this season and for the upcoming hunting season please stop by www.wildfowlgear.com to find a large selection of hunting gear for serious hunters.

Take care and happy hunting this coming season. -

Taking Risks: Star Trek and the Moon Landing

With the J.J. Abrams Star Trek "origins" movie, this significant franchise is getting a much-deserved reboot into the popular consciousness. At the very end of the movie, when Leonard Nimoy recited the famous "Space: the final frontier..." intro and we heard the original TV show theme music, I was suddenly beamed into nostalgia land.

I never considered myself to be a Trekkie, or Trekker, or Trekkist, or whatever you want to call them. Nevertheless, as a kid I made sure to catch every episode of Star Trek because the stories were thought-provoking and just plain fun.

Sure, it was mostly a cheesy, low-budget fantasy show with laughably cheap sets, but Star Trek also featured some high-quality, well-written shows among the occasional mediocre ones. Some episodes were brilliant, some were so-so, but none were totally bad. Even the worst ones had something of interest to offer. Star Trek always made you think, in the same way The Twilight Zone would grab you and turn your usual thought patterns inside out and upside down.

Returning to Yesterday with Star Trek: The Original Series (ST:TOS)

Not too long ago, I was surprised to learn that all 79 episodes of ST:TOS can be found at CBS.com, remastered in Hi-Def with no commercials. And that brings me to a recent revelation. When I found this Trek treasure-trove, it was hard to decide what I should watch. Over the years, I'd seen most of the shows over and over again, but there were some that I had only caught once when they first aired.

Pretty much at random, I played "Return to Tomorrow" and visited an episode I hadn't seen in over forty years. From the perspective of an adult, I found this story to be a fine example of the worst and best aspects of the original Star Trek.

The Enterprise comes across a planet that harbors pure-energy remnants of three survivors from a race that had died off half a million years earlier. These aliens seek to "borrow" the bodies of Enterprise crew members (Kirk, Spock and a hot chick) so they can build androids into which they will transfer their non-corporeal consciousness -- then they can live again as physical beings. Complications and a corny tragic romance ensue in predictable fashion.

A Prophetic Monolog: Captain Kirk's famous "Risk" Speech

Twenty minutes into this episode, the key Enterprise members are trying to decide if they should comply with the alien's wishes. All agree to go along except Dr. McCoy who considers the procedure to be unpredictable and far too risky. This prompts Kirk to give the following over-the-top speech, embarrassingly delivered in William Shatner's trademark jolting, highly impassioned manner that has endeared him to millions of fans.

"They use to say if mankind could fly, he'd have wings -- but he did fly. He discovered he had to. Do you wish that the first Apollo mission hadn't reached the moon, or that we hadn't gone on to Mars and then to the nearest star? That's like saying you wish that you still operated with scalpels and sewed your patients up with catgut like your great-great-great-great grandfather used to. I'm in command. I could order this, but I'm not because Doctor McCoy is right in pointing out the enormous danger potential in any contact with life and intelligence as fantastically advanced as this, but I must also point out that the possibilities -- the potential for knowledge and advancement is equally great. Risk! Risk is our business. That's what this starship is all about. That's why we're aboard her. You may dissent without any prejudice. Do I hear a negative vote?"

The Moon Landing is ancient history in Star Trek's world

Did you catch that reference to "the first Apollo mission"? This show originally aired on February 9, 1968. To the audience at the time, the moon landing had not yet taken place, and it was by no means a sure thing. In fact, we now know that there were serious technical problems encountered during the landing, and it was only the uncanny piloting skills of Neil Armstrong, plus a lot of luck, that avoided a horrible disaster on that momentous day in July, 1969.

But for Captain Kirk, the moon landing was old news, as it is for us today. And this demonstrates the abiding appeal of science fiction that Star Trek brought to a global mass audience. "Risk is our business." Embrace the possibilities of the future, then some day you can look back and marvel at the wonders that have come to pass.

Past and Future Trek:  Gene Roddenberry's Legacy

In many ways, Star Trek showed us what was scientifically feasible -- and in some cases, it actually made them come true. It is well-known that the cool futuristic "communicator" inspired the invention of a practical mobile phone (according to its inventor at Motorola, Dr. Martin Cooper). Now let's get busy with the universal translator, phaser, replicator, transporter, and holodeck.

Star Trek continues to lead humanity toward a wondrous future. The original series made a significant impression on the Baby Boomers, and the latest incarnation will certainly have a similar impact on Millennials who have never seen Classic Star Trek.

Thank you, Gene (wherever you are), for continuing to portray a positive, exciting vision of humanity's future. Hey, it looks like maybe I'm really a Trekkie after all. Okay, I can accept that... Beam me aboard!
